| TNT is beyond all doubt a shimmering hardrock band! During their long and successful carreer they always delivered high qualitiy song material and mega hits like "10,000 Lovers" or "Intuition", to name only a few are still present! There is no doubt about it that the two TNT masterminds Tony Harnell on vocals and Ronni Le Tekro on guitars are one of the best in their genre! In 1982 it was a little town in the northern Norway called Trondheim where the rock band TNT was born. They were four guys, Dag Ingebrigtsen (Vocal), Ronni Le Tekro (Guitar), Steiner Eikum (Bass), and Morten "Diesel" Dahl. At that time, there was no rock market around. They played at clubs a lot and started getting people's attention. Then they got a record deal at Vertigo. TNT released their first album "TNT". Because all lyrics were in Norwegian, it was released only in Norway. Even though TNT released their first album, it was not a success. Steiner left the band 1983 and a good friend of the rest of the band, Morty Black joined TNT. Because of Dag's personal problems and the band wanted an international success, he left TNT in 1984. The band received a tape from a singer of a local band in New York called 'Jackal'. His name was Tony Harnell! Even though Gary Barden (ex. MSG) was almost chosen as a new singer, the band decided to go with Tony only 3 days before they were going to the studio to record the second album. Their record deal was domestic through Vertigo, but after Tony joined the band, they got an international deal through Polygram. Later that year, they released "Knights Of The New Thunder". To pursue the image of an all Norwegian band, Tony Harnell was listed as Tony Hansen. Although Tony only added his vocals to already recorded tracks and he couldn't give any input to the band, the album sounded a lot better than the first one, and of course all lyrics were in English. They were already famous in Norway and sold out all shows during their Norwegian tour and toured the east coast of U.S. In 1987 "Tell No Tales" was released. Songs on this album were very different from their old ones. It was a great hard rock album with sophisticated arrangement and strong hook lines. Songs featured Tony's high tone voice, such as "10,000 Lovers (In One)" and "Everyone's A Star", were played on radio in US and the band supported STRYPER and LOUDNESS during their west coast tour. After the tour, Diesel left TNT and started "TINDRUM" with first singer Dag. Later TNT welcomed Morty's old friend, Kenneth Odiin who was an enginner for recording a demo tape of "Tell No Tales" as a new drummer. In 1988 TNT won the Spellemannspris Award (Norway's Grammy Award). "Intuition" was released and became one of best hard rock albums in 1989. The title track "Intuition" started selling in Japan first. Even though Tony didn't want that song to be on the album personally because he thought it was too 'pop', "Intuition" became a hit in Japan and they toured in Japan in August. They taped one show in Tokyo and released it as a live video 'Forever Shine On' in 1991. After the japanese tour, Kenneth Odiin left the band and the band lost the record deal with PolyGram. "Intuition" sold big quantities in Japan and Norway but this didn't satisfy PolyGram. In 1991 TNT was supposed to be writing for their fifth album but not actually doing much, Morty formed the cover band BAD HABITZ of Thin Lizzy material and later Ronni joined. TNT was looking for a new drummer and writing songs for a new album in 1992. Tony contacted Joe Franco (drummer for TWISTED SISTER) and he introduced the band to one of his students, John Macaluso. They signed a new record deal with Atlantic and released the fifth album "Realized Fantasies". Although the quality of this album was not that bad, it was different from "Tell No Tales" or "Intuition" and didn't sell well. After the Japanese tour, TNT disbanded. BAD HABITZ recorded their one and only album "Bad Habitz". They toured Norway more than they did in TNT. John Macaluso left the band and joined RIOT. In 1993 Ronni and Morty formed a new band VAGABOND and released their first self-titled album in 1994. The sound was nothing like TNT. It was more like progressive rock and many of TNT fans who were expecting TNT-like hard rock were not happy with Ronni's direction. While Ronni and Morty were doing VAGABOND stuff, Tony formed a band MORNING WOOD with Al Pitrelli (ALICE COOPER, MEGADETH), Danny Miranda (B.O.C) and Chuck Bonfonte (SARAYA) and released a self-titled album. It contains all acoustic songs and some covers including TNT's "Tonite I'm Falling". Also he sang on some tribute albums. Ronni teamed up with a Norwegian jazz guitarlist Terje Rypdal with Morty, Steiner Skaget (drummer of VAGABOND), Dag Stokke (keyboard player for TNT) and released an album called "Rypdal & Tekro". While TNT fans were waiting for reunion, PolyGram released "Till Next Time" (The Best Of TNT) only in Japan. In July 1996, TNT announced reunion after 4 years since they had broke up. Line-up is Tony, Ronni, and Morty plus Dag Stokke as a support keyboard player and Frode Hansen as a support drummer. On New Year's Eve, TNT appeared on Norwegian TV and played some songs from their upcoming album "Firefly". In Jaunary 1997, "Firefly" was released in Norway first, then in February in Japan following the single "Daisy Jayne". In April, TNT started touring in Scandinavia then in Japan where they sold out all the shows. In September, Tony left TNT to pursue his solo career. The band was writing songs for the next album, but obviously they were forced to stop. In November, RYPDAL & TEKRO released the second album, "Rypdal & Tekro II". Tony came back into TNT 1998 after almost a year of his departure and Ronni and Tony spent some time in Spain to write songs for "Transistor". TNT finished recording and mixing their 7th studio album "Transistor" came out in August 1999. Even though the fans were patiently waiting for the band to tour, they didn't do any shows. Tony started WESTWORLD with Mark Reale (RIOT), Bruno Ravel (DANGER DANGER), and John O'Reilly (RAINBOW) and released their debut album to critical aclaim. In 2000 there was a plan to release a compilation album called "The Big Bang Anthology" which includes the full albums of "Knights Of The New Thunder", "Tell No Tales", "Intuition", and "Realized Fantasies" as well as some unreleased tracks; however, because of problems between the band and record label, it didn't happen. TNT was on hold and Tony's WESTWORLD released their second album "Skin" which was followed by their first live album, "Live...In The Flesh" in 2001. Diesel re-joined TNT, and they've been recording demos for a new album. Also, "Rypdal & Tekro 3" has been recorded and will be released soon. Now and finally TNT is back with new songs and new releases. Their live appearance at germans BANG YOUR HEAD open-air festival is accompanied by an EP release entitled "Give Me A Sign". The EP features four brand new tracks and the demotrack "Destiny" from the "Tell No Tales" recording sessions. The EP is followed by a full length album in fall 2003 and an extended european tour. "Give Me A Sign" as well as the forthcoming album is produced by Tommy Hansen who worked for HELLOWEEN, PRETTY MAIDS, JORN LANDE, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, HEAVENLY, BEYOND TWILIGHT, and more. | |
