EMERALD RAIN is a four-piece melodic rock band from Toronto, Canada. The band was formed in February 1997 by Murray Daigle (lead vocals), Mike Dmitrovic (guitars, backing vocals) and Sean Gregory (bass guitar, backing vocals), but their journey began in 1994 when they called themselves PAIN. Within a year of forming, they came to the attention of the Japanese label Alfa/Brunette which released in 1995 their debut album, followed the year later by the second album "Pieces" which gained European distribution through the German company, Maple Leaf Records. After a period of moderate success and the departure of Jevon Rudder, they decided they had taken Pain as far as they could and it was time for a change. One thing the remaining trio had come to realise was that their future lay together, and they wasted no time in settling on a new more melodic sound, and a new name, EMERALD RAIN. After they found a new drummer, Lorne Boyle, they got signed in the end on Now & Then / Frontiers which released in 1998 the band's debut album "BROKEN SAVIOURS". The record was fresh and vibrant, and met with great reviews and success from all over the world. By the time the album was released in Europe Lorne Boyle had departed and was replaced by Kyle Lazenka. The follow-up, "AGE OF INNOCENCE" was recorded in the summer of 1999 and released to coincide with a Gods Festival appearance. They also did some more UK shows with labelmates Bob Catley and Millenium. "AGE OF INNOCENCE" was a more mature and varied effort and was very well received by the music press. The sound quality of the disc was very high and the songwriting was improving at a frightening rate, with some catchy songs and excellent ballads mixed in among the driving rockers. Sean and Mike both made their first appearances in the instrument polls of some of the European magazines. They returned home to Canada to continue their studio production and session work, and also took the unusual step of recording a live album in their native land. "LIVE 2K", captures the band in their best environment. Recorded at the Dungeon, in Kyle's home town of Oshawa, the CD featured the highlights of both their previous albums, as well as one extra studio track. Immediately after the release of "LIVE 2K" drummer Kyle Lazenka announced that he was leaving to take a chance with his original band, Very Jive. By this time they had written the material for their third studio album, "PERPLEXED IN THE EXTREME", but still had no drummer. As luck would have it, top session drummer Randy Cooke (James LaBrie, Lee Aaron, Dalbello, Sass Jordan, Rik Emmett and Kim Mitchell) had recently done some work at Mike and Sean's studio so they phoned him up, played him the new songs, and he said he would love to be involved. The result was another huge step forward in the songwriting department, with some of the songs being lighter than ever before, while others were a step back to the heavier sound of the Pain material. Now with "Short Sighted", the band has a new label, yet another drummer and another classic Melodic Rock recording. |
