| Danish guitarist Steen Grøntved is a veteran of the session music scene having appeared on countless releases over the last few years (within Denmark mostly) across many genres. Steen makes his debut onto the instrumental guitar platform with the fusion/jazz/rock rich Night Vision Goggles. The album is home to 12 tracks that travel through a myriad of tonalities and cultural expressions with an end product that is very accessible and possesses strong melodic content. On the music Steen has offered some of his observations (which can be read in full at the LM website). Opener Timber explores Greg Howe inspired waters, The Worm was written (with small bars) directly into the key-editor of Cubase with no instruments around. Playground is simple, soft and melodic whilst Home Planet is a melodic pop song before the rocking Run ventures into Joe Satriani inspired waters. Bye is a take on traditional Danish song melody. Secret Lab can be seen as a brother track to The Worm followed by the delicate and pristine 8 finger tapping track My Butterfly. Still Here is another slice of melodic lead guitar over a rich backing before Round and around possesses a big expansive sound inspired by West African rhythms. What Mango? is mamba from hell playing around with poly-rhythms and the album is rounded out with Find The Pick showcasing a slap guitar technique on a traditional Spanish guitar. | |
