| (Comments by Jim Peterik): Even after spending over 40 years in rock and roll I have to say that playing the Lokerse Feesten in Belgium with Pride Of Lions in August '05 was one of the high points of my entire career. It was one of those shows that was just right from the get-go. Being our first time overseas as a band, our excitement level was already very high. When the head of the fest, Luk Roover, brought us to the gig-site the night before we were to play, our enthusiasm rose to fever pitch: the staging, the lighting, the gi-normous sound system- and best of all, an audience of nearly 20,000 totally getting into the music, dancing to the rhythm and cheering wildly for the main attractions. As we surveyed the awesome scene we pictured ourselves there the following night on that stage, rocking for that great audience. We could not even fully grasp it. It had been years since I had been on such a stage probably not since Survivor toured with REO Speedwagon or Bryan Adams. But it meant even more to me now-all these years later. We sound checked the following day-Larry Millas, our sound engineer busily ran through the sound system to learn every nuance, myself, Toby Hitchcock (on vocals), Mike Aquino (lead guitars), Ed Breckenfeld (drums), Klem Hayes (bass guitar) and Christian Cullen (keyboards) hit the stage and got familiar with the gear. I mapped out my strategy of how I was going to get down into the crowd off of the mammoth stage during "Eye Of The Tiger". The video crew was setting up their 12 cameras for the dvd shoot and the mobile truck was doing its check for the 48 channel feed to the stage. That night Pride of Lions hit at the stroke of 8:15. we could immediately feel the surging energy off the audience as we launched into "It's Criminal" with many of the people singing along with the chorus. We saw many wearing Pride Of Lions t-shirts and even some banners (one reading "Born To Believe In You"). Any nervousness we might have felt melted away as we felt the acceptance of the crowd. We went though song after song with Toby gaining more and more confidence with each one, the power house rhythm section of Ed Breckenfeld and Klem Hayes holding down the fort giving the rest of us free reign to play with the free spirit that is the hallmark of a live rock performance. It was truly one of those nights where the stars aligned and everything went right. Exactly 90 minutes after our first downbeat we left the stage dazed and amazed by what had just taken place. The dvd and cd you now hold in your hands is the evidence from that night- frozen forever in time. It was all made possible by Frontiers Records, Luk Roover and all the heads of the Lokerse Feesten and a village of great, caring and passionate volunteers. Hopefully when you watch and listen to this you will feel some of the electricity that we felt that one magical night in Belgium. Pride Of Lions would like to thank the people of Belgium for their extreme hospitality. | |
