Formed in Los Angeles during the early 1980s, Armored Saint were part of an explosive West Coast scene that included the likes of Dokken, Malice, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue (Tommy Lee being very nearly an early AS member) and Metallica. The latter, in particular, were somewhat taken with The Saint, going so far as to offer a couple of the members – vocalist John Bush & bassist Joey Vera – an alternative gig! Both, however, stayed true to The Cause, and by 1984 they were signed up to a major (Chrysalis) and recording their debut album with producer Michael James Jackson, fresh from working with a rejuvenated Kiss. The result was ‘March Of The Saint’ – hailed by Kerrang! as having ‘more balls than a snooker marathon’, and generally regarded as one the era’s finest Power Metal releases. US tours with both W.A.S.P. and Metallica further showcased their AHTs (Advanced Headbanging Tactics), and it’s entirely fitting that ‘March…’ was to lay the foundation for a career that continues to kick codpiece to this day.
